Mercado Anton Martin

mercado food

Today I went and explored at Mercado Anton Martin on Calle Atocha in Madrid.

For me, this activity checked several boxes. First, if you read my last post about cooking dinner, you know I have been searching for something to eat besides the olives in my vodka some culinary inspiration.  Second, I’m always trying to eat-healthy-live-healthy-breathe-healthy. (Not trying hard, mind you. But trying. And a market where people are drinking red wine, eating cheese and gossiping in their outside voices is just my kind of healthy vibe. Third, I’m always trying to learn more Spanish.
I discovered wonderful things with regard to both food and language at Mercado Anton Martin! Read all about my weekday adventure below.

The Mercado Anton Martin Experience

Spanish markets are a right-of-passage. At first, foreigners scuttle through them, looking for signs in English and small tapas plates. But as I’ve become more comfortable with the language and customs of the country, markets have become a delight.

People slow down. They wait their turn at each food stall. Women gossip and their husbands stand around and laugh. Couples fight about which cut of meat or head of lettuce or loaf of bread they should select. (Pro-tip: Spanish couples fight about everything. It’s a sign of affection.) People stop for a glass of wine. It’s a true cultural experience.

Today I sailed right past my usual Haagen-Daz-and-cereal skim-milk-and-eggs grocer and found the following culinary delights.

Okay, okay-I didn’t came home with “dinner” exactly.  Not unless you count cherries and organic chocolate-flavored tea as “dinner”.  But I did not eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich even once today!  It’s a step in the right direction.

Stay fabulous!
