NYC Marathon

statue of liberty

Is this just a gratuitous post so I can show off my pictures of the NYC Marathon, you ask? Yes. Yes, it is. But it will also be interspersed with facts about the history of the race and the current course. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m sort of an ‘interesting-facts-about-various-places-and-activities’ nerd. Luckily, the NYC Marathon is the perfect event to celebrate that affliction. So without further ado: NYC Marathon Interesting Facts and Pictures Staten Island The race starts in Staten Island on the Verrazano Bridge. This bridge provides transit between Staten Island and Brooklyn. It is named in honor of Giovanni de Verrazzano, the Italian credited as the first…

Valencia, Spain: Five Fabulous Things

Central Market Valencia

In the years I’ve lived in Spain, I’ve always been appreciative of the fabulous things to do in Valencia. As a result, I visit the city (Spain’s third largest) at least once a year. Actually, I like Valencia so much, I’ve actually written about it before. However, instead of focusing on fly-boarding and how I’m generally an annoying person to make plans with, this post will focus on all the best things to do in Valencia. I hope you enjoy! Five Fabulous Things to Do in Valencia The City of Arts and Science/Cuidad de Artes y Ciencias The first thing that is important to consider in your Valencian plans: They…

Things You Can Accomplish in Twenty Minutes

There's a lot you can accomplish in twenty minutes

In my sabbatical time, the organization of my days can feel overwhelming. My savior has been ‘The Pomodoro Technique‘, a time management strategy where you set a timer for twenty minutes and concentrate on a given task. As a result, I’ve learned there are a LOT of things you can accomplish in twenty minutes. Here’s a short list of things I’ve checked off using the Pomodoro Technique lately: Things You Can Accomplish in Twenty Minutes SEO optimization on 1-2 blog posts (Apparently, Google ranking is a big deal. Who knew?) What I like to call the ‘house-keeping hat trick’: Clean bathroom/fold laundry/unload dishwasher A large amount of research about shin…

The Prado, Madrid: Five Fabulous Things

The Prado Museum in Madrid is viewed as the epicenter of the art scene for the city, if not the whole country. It’s with good reason-the Prado is Spain’s national art museum, and it contains more than 7,000 paintings and thousands of other important Spanish works of art. Now that I’m living back in Spain, I’m delighted to spend time at the Prado again, visiting my favorite paintings. While The Prado certainly has more than five fabulous things, here are my favorites: 1 Las Meninas by Velasquez (Room 12) One of the most important painters in Spanish history was Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velasquez (Spanish people have crazy last…

Tier 3 Activities: Test Yourself

get outside your comfort zone

A few weeks ago during a trip to Maine, I was sitting outside a backcountry hut in Baxter State Park, talking to some hikers. I was there to attempt to climb Mt. Katahdin (spoiler alert-I made it. See photo.) and we were comparing route tips and other adventure stories. Somehow we got on the topic of fly boarding, one of my very favorite outdoor adventure activities. (For those of you that are not familiar, fly boarding consists of hooking a platform with a water spout on its underside up to a jet ski, then using the spout to push the platform up into the air above the water so you…

Mid-Coast Maine: Five Fabulous Things

picture of maine

Let’s ignore for a moment that summer is ending (see related post on previous summer reflections here) and talk more about fun travel destinations. For those who’ve never been, Maine (AKA Vacationland) is split into eight regions. (Note: I’m not sure how official the ‘regions’ are, but Maine Bed and Breakfast endorsed them, so that’s good enough for me. See map.) Obviously, there’s a lot of ground to cover (and on rather local roads), so it makes sense to review the regions one by one. I’ve spent the most time in ‘Mid-Coast Maine’, the region that stretches from I-95 down to the water between Brunswick and West Penobscot Bay. I…

Pitch Wars: The Hope Inside Yourself

a pitch

Yesterday, the mentors were announced for Pitch Wars 2019. For those unfamiliar with Pitch Wars, it is a once-a-year manuscript submission contest. Chosen participants spend six months working through their novels with a trained, professional editor/writer. More often than not, the finished products are picked up for literary agent representation and then publication. Basically, in my mind, the coolness-factor of the whole thing is right up there with Coachella or a reservation at Frenchette. As I obsessively perused glanced over the list of participating faculty for this year’s Pitch Wars program, I started thinking a lot about the importance of mentors. The term ‘mentor’ is actually a homage to the…

St. John, USVI: Five Fabulous Things

Looking over USVI National Park

Something that I don’t talk about a lot on here: As my New York friends like to put it, ‘I’m sort of outdoorsy’. (see related post here) I like to go on long hikes, solo camping adventures and I’ve spent more than one day of my life in a 16-foot rubber raft, wedged next to a bucket of poop, floating around in some ridiculously beautiful places. One of my “outdoorsy” pursuits in life is to visit all the national parks in the US system. After the inauguration of Indiana Dunes National Park this summer , there are 59. In July, I visited my 45th. This meant two things: 1 I’m…

Three Stars: Online Reviews

the importance of online reviews

In a summer full of invigorating sightseeing, long books, and copious free time, I have developed a new interest: online reviews. Yes, I understand that I could pursue a more productive ‘thought hobby’. For example, I could research a war or reading about astrophysics. But two things I have been doing a lot this year are traveling and writing (see reminder post here). Both place huge importance in the online review culture. And I find the nonsense of it all compellingly attractive. In our society you can online review anything, from the complete works of William Shakespeare (3.8 stars) to a t-shirt with three wolves howling at the moon (4.4…
